Gary started as a joke. Something that we would name every dog, cat, or furry creature we’d encounter on tour. We found a portrait of a German Shepherd in a thrift store, so it was only appropriate to name it Gary, and he sat/sits on stage with us for every show. Gary was something that we shared as a group of friends.
Two years ago, we started the process of recording a batch of songs that we had painstakingly fleshed out during practices. At that point, our first album was five years old, and we hadn’t released anything besides a one-off song in 2015. We had these songs, and we were proud of them. We wanted people to hear them. We wanted a second album.
Two years ago, starting in August 2017, we got the skeleton of our new album recorded with our good friend Kenny Eaton at Mystery Ton Studios. Drums, bass, and rhythm guitar were recorded in his beautiful studio, and we had the foundation done.
Fast forward to January 2019. Having taken some time off from recording, the process began again, but this time helmed by our dear friend Derek Salazar. Derek came down from Philly to spend a week with us hunkered down in our drummer’s grandfather’s house. We had the place to ourselves, and that’s where the meat and muscle was stuck to the bones we had established in 2017.
Our drummer’s grandfather passed away in March of 2019, and his name was Gary. Most of this album was recorded in his home. It quickly became evident that we needed to name the album Gary, to honor him, and to honor our friendship with one another. Gary is our second album, and these songs mean the world to us.
